The TAU Fellows Award aims to recognise and support TAU fellows (either individuals or groups) who have contributed as effective change agents and made an outstanding impact on the advancement of teaching and learning in the South African Higher Education sector.

It was with great pleasure that we announced the winner of the first TAU Fellows Award: Prof Elmarie Costandius, from the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Stellenbosch.

The award recognises outstanding leadership and agency in improving teaching and learning in particular, in relation to addressing issues of social justice. This is exactly what Elmarie, a Fellow from the TAU 1 cohort, demonstrated in the work she has done. One of the things that stands out in Elmarie’s work is a commitment to addressing social injustices from a perspective of possibility rather than deficit, and her exciting and courageous work across disciplines.

More detail about her work can be found on the University of Stellenbosch website https://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/news/DispForm.aspx?ID=10197

With great sadness we note that Elmarie passed away after a motorcar accident in January 2024.  The TAU Fellows Award prize money has been donated to the University of Stellenbosch to contribute to ongoing projects arising out of Elmarie’s work.
